The story behind "Simon from Zanzibar"

Simon came by every day on the beach near Paje, on the island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania. He lives in Arusha, but comes over to sell bracelets his family makes. Together with his friends, he was ready for tourist season, even though there were no tourist yet.

After we told him that we did not need any bracelets, him and his friends were happy to hang out with us, just to learn and improve their Spanish, so that when the tourist would show up, they could be attacked full force :-)

Actually his friend spoke almost fluently italian, they all had cell-phones under their traditional dress, but still were poor by anyones finacial standards. But they seem to enjoy life, accepting and trying to improve it.
